Resume for freshers: what to write with no experience
Start here
You do not need a job history
Many first-job resumes are empty because the writer thinks there is nothing to say. There is. A recruiter wants to know three things: what you studied, what you can do, and which job you want.
Your education, your projects and your skills answer all three. Write them clearly and in the right order, and one page is enough.
- Your degree and college, near the top.
- One or two projects, written as short points.
- Any internship or training, even a short one.
- The tools you can use, such as Tally, Excel or one programming language.
- The job you want, written under your name.
Order
Use these headings, in this order
Recruiters and software both expect a familiar order. Use standard headings and keep to this list.
- 1. Name and job title: tells the recruiter which job you want.
- 2. Contact: phone, email and city. Nothing more is needed.
- 3. Summary: two or three lines on your degree, main skills and target job.
- 4. Education: for a fresher this is your strongest proof, so it comes early.
- 5. Projects or internships: shows what you have done, not only what you studied.
- 6. Skills: the tools and skills the job asks for.
- 7. Certifications: courses and certificates you have completed.
- 8. Languages: the languages you can work in.
Proof
How to write projects and internships
Write two to four short bullet points for each project or internship. Start each point with an action word such as Prepared, Built, Entered, Tested, Assisted or Organised. Then say what you did and which tool you used.
If you have a good project or an internship, show it right after your education. The page then fills with real work, and nobody is left looking at an empty gap where a job history would go.
Weak
I was responsible for the college project work.
Better
Prepared a sample balance sheet in Excel for a college project.
Weak
Did computer work in my internship.
Better
Entered sample purchase and sales vouchers in Tally during my internship.
Details
Choose a job title and keep it short
Write the job you want directly under your name. It tells both the recruiter and the software what to look for. Be honest, and add “Fresher” so nobody thinks you have experience you do not have.
- Accounts Assistant (Fresher)
- Data Entry Operator (Fresher)
- Junior Software Developer (Fresher)
One page is best. Two pages is the most a fresher needs. If your resume runs longer, remove the lines that do not help you get this job.
Skills
Skills to list, by degree
List the skills your target job asks for. These are good places to start.
B.Com, BBA, BA
Tally, Excel, MS Office, typing speed, basic GST knowledge and good English.
BSc, BCA
Excel, MS Office, one programming language such as Python or Java, and a small project.
Engineering (BE, B.Tech)
One programming language you know well, your projects, and the tools you used.
Avoid these
Small things that weaken a fresher resume
Mistake
A photo
Most jobs do not need one, and it takes space from your skills.
Better
Use that space for skills and projects. Add a photo only if an employer asks.
Mistake
“Seeking a suitable job”
It says nothing about you.
Better
Write your degree, your main skills and the job you want.
Mistake
Long paragraphs
They are hard to scan, for people and for software.
Better
Use two to four short bullet points for each project.
Mistake
Spelling mistakes
They make a resume look careless.
Better
Read it again before you download it.
Mistake
Too many personal details
Father's name, religion and a full address are not needed.
Better
Phone, email and city are enough.
A short sample

FAQ
Common questions
How do I make a resume with no work experience?
Lead with your education, then add your college projects, any internship, your skills and your certificates. Write each project as short bullet points that start with an action word. A fresher resume does not need a job history; it needs proof that you can do the work.
What job title should a fresher write?
Write the job you are applying for, and be clear that you are a fresher. For example: Accounts Assistant (Fresher). Do not use a senior title you have not held.
Should a fresher resume have a photo?
No. Most jobs do not need one, and a photo adds nothing for ATS software. Use that space for your skills and projects, and add a photo only if an employer asks for it.
What should I write instead of 'Seeking a suitable job'?
Write two or three short lines covering your degree, your main skills and the job you want. For example: B.Com graduate with Tally and Excel skills, looking for an accounts assistant role.
How long should a fresher resume be?
One page is best, and two pages is the most a fresher needs. If you go over one page, check that every line helps you get this particular job.
Does ResumeDB have a sample resume for freshers?
Yes. The free resume builder has a Fresher sample for a graduate who has not worked yet. It also has a Software Engineer sample, which suits engineering freshers. Pick one and replace it with your own details.
Will a fresher resume on ResumeDB get me a job?
We cannot promise a job. What we can say is that once your resume is built on ResumeDB, recruiters who search for your kind of role can find it.
